Choosing the right nonwoven fabric can be challenging, especially when trying to balance quality and cost. One of the key factors is GSM (grams per square meter). However, higher GSM does not always mean better performance, and lower GSM does not always mean lower quality. The goal is to find the GSM that provides the best value for your specific product.
This blog will help you understand GSM clearly and guide you through four real examples.
What Is GSM, and Why Does It Matter?
GSM measures how heavy the fabric is:
Low GSM → lighter, thinner, more economical
High GSM → thicker, stronger, more premium
The right GSM depends on what the product must do and how it will be used.
Four Practical Examples to Help You Choose
Disposable Towels
100% viscose. Viscose is soft, absorbent, and skin-friendly.
- 35–55gsm: Light and economical. Good for simple facial cleansing or single-use salon needs.
- 55–85gsm: Balanced softness and strength. Most popular choice for daily salon and spa use.
- 85–120gsm: Thick and premium. Ideal for hair drying or stronger absorbency.
Tip: If you want a soft and high-quality feeling without overspending, 60–80gsm is usually enough for most salon applications.
Waxing Strips
100% polyester. Polyester is strong, smooth, and has good tear resistance.
- 50–70gsm: Suitable for soft waxing applications at home or for lighter use.
- 70–100gsm: Stronger pull performance, better for professional salons.
- 100–120gsm: Extra strong and durable, often chosen for premium hair-removal kits.
Tip: Polyester feels lighter than viscose even at the same GSM, so the feeling may seem thinner—but performance remains strong.
Disposable Bed Sheets
PP nonwoven (polypropylene). PP is breathable, hygienic, and cost-friendly.
- 15–25gsm: For basic protection and high-volume spa or clinic use.
- 30–40gsm: Better coverage and less transparency, more comfortable for clients.
- 50–100gsm: Strong and premium. Suitable for medical use or repeated positioning on the bed.
Tip: For beauty salons, 25-35gsm is often the most cost-effective choice.
Cleaning Wipes
Viscose + polyester blend. Blended fabrics combine absorbency (viscose) and strength (polyester).
- 35–55gsm: Light multi-purpose wipes for simple cleaning.
- 55–85gsm: Balanced strength and absorption. Good for daily use.
- 90–120gsm: Thick and durable, suitable for heavy-duty cleaning.
Tip: The blend ratio (for example 50/50, 70/30) affects wet strength and softness, so GSM is only part of the decision.
GSM Is Important—but It’s Not the Only Factor
Even if two fabrics have the same GSM, they can still feel different. This is because performance is also affected by:
- material composition (viscose, polyester, PP, blends)
- surface structure / embossing pattern
A different blend or pattern may change the softness, strength, or thickness of the final product. These small details can greatly impact user experience—but customers do not need to worry about all the technical terms. We are here to help.
